Immersive Tech
pop-up museum

Think about an artist's pop-up exhibit at the Carnegie Art Museum and how immersive technology could make it more engaging for visitors.

Duration  - 4 Weeks

Skills:  Sketchup, Photoshop, Aftereffects, physical model making, rapid interaction prototyping

Process - Medium

For this museum, I aimed to increase visitors' appreciation of Cauleen Smith's work on the artwork ‘Pandemic Diaries’ as strikes a huge chord with me as it intends to symbolize something that can be perceived as both negative and positive.

The visitors approach the introductory section, and the first thing they view is the chosen artwork, whose video is playing as if it is a hybrid artwork. The stills from the artwork are besides as well. On the left wall, there is context and information about the style and knowledge of the artist. This would allow visitors to comprehend her better for the rest of the exhibit.

Then you head right into an interactive space which is a section with mirrors on all sides. This interaction is about showcasing the timeline of covid. Smith’s artworks were cultivated over a period of time and not overnight, thus, I decided to showcase a timeline of the same experience. The floor pattern has been arranged in a typical covid era manner with assigned standing spots 6 feet apart from each other, the assigned spots are located above the trigger points of the pressure sensor which is the key to starting up the interaction as well.

Then as you walk ahead, this section would help you to understand about the issue to the core, and moreover how Smith’s artworks speak about the issue. This interactive space allows you to create your own manifesto virtually, which is a lot similar to that of Smith’s.

Lastly , this section is about reflection rather than interaction. The artist’s work is based on imposed ideologies that have been instilled in us because of the pandemic, this section encourages you to write those opinions and ideologies down while reflecting on your experience with the exhibit and the pandemic in general.

Major Interaction prototyping

The interaction is in the room of mirrors which highlight the covid timeline as I mentioned before. The artwork is in synergy with light and sound. The pressure-sensitive sensors on assigned standing spots light up the interaction and reveal the timeline when you stand on it. Directly above the standing spot is the sound dome, which narrates the timeline as well. This makes the overall experience more immersive a user-friendly for all, including people with disabilities.
